Yasser Arafat was a Palestinian resistance fighter and politician, (joint) winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize, President of the Palestinian Authority until his death, and leader of both the PLO and its main faction, Al Fatah.
I always thought Arafat was very suitable for a caricature with his Arabic scarf, his typical smile and his stubble beard.
I started - as usual - with a little pencil sketch that I then inked. Later I enlarged it to A4 size with the copier...
I once put together a booklet with my inked caricatures, '30 gekke bekken' ('30 funny faces')
and Arafat was the most prominent on the cover.
For a local exhibition I copied the pen drawing onto transparent film and placed it in front of a drawing sheet with ecoline colors
and framed it. You can see the drop shadow from the film above, the paper is now wrinkled and shifted a bit.
That was not my first caricature of Arafat. Above you see my very first attempt, I was 17 at the time
and I was still very inexperienced in making caricatures and in drawing in general :-)
Later I portrayed Arafat one more time, in 1995, for the Flemish children's magazine 'KLAP',
when he had decided to rebuild instead of fight.
